A culinary tarragon herb with yellow marigold flowers. Position: full sun Soil: moist, but well-drained soil Rate of growth: average Flowering period: August to September Hardiness: half-hardy (will need winter protection) A tender, bushy perennial, often grown as an annual with aromatic, glossy green, linear leaves used as a tarragon substitute in Mexican cooking. Not a ‘true’ tarragon, it nonetheless has a delicious and similar flavour for use when the genuine herb is dormant over the winter. Clusters of small, golden-yellow flowers are borne in late summer and autumn. Plant in a sunny spot with well-drained soil or grow in a container until the first frosts. Garden care: Ensure good drainage in the pot or soil area when planting by incorporating grit and working the ground on particularly heavy soils. Cut back after flowering if growing as an ornamental. Potted plants should be moved to an unheated greenhouse or sheltered porch during the winter months, while others should be protected with horticultural fleece.
