A white and claret red single hardy annual. Position: full sun Soil: well-drained, preferably poor soil Rate of growth: average Hardiness: hardy annual Beautiful, papery-white single flowers with a claret basal blotch, ‘Maanzaad’ is grown as a hardy annual and is a hit with pollinating insects. It’s also a real breadwinner as the seeds are considered to be the best (of the poppies) for making a textural topping for bread. Also, while the rest of the plant is harmful if eaten, these poppy seeds are also perfect for adding flavour to curries and salads. Growing instructions: Sow direct in spring and early summer in the location where the poppies are to flower (try to avoid root disturbance). Seeds are tiny and need light to germinate so leave them uncovered – but they can be washed away when watering so take care. Alternatively, sow in August or September for earlier flowers the following year. Protect the emerging seedlings from slugs and snails. Sow: August to September (under glass) or March to May (direct) Flowering: June to August
