An assorted mix of flame-coloured perennials grown as an annual. Position: full sun Soil: well-drained, preferably poor soil Rate of growth: average Hardiness: hardy perennial (but usually grown as an annual) Often grown as an annual poppy with hairy, grey-green, pinnately lobed leaves. These flame-coloured, papery poppies would ignite any border or planting scheme with their delicate, bowl-shaped blooms in a fiery mixture of yellow, orange, pink and white. Growing instructions: Poppies dislike root disturbance, so sow shallowly, directly into a well-prepared bed in spring and water well. As they develop, thin to 30cm intervals to retain healthy and robust seedlings and protect from slugs and snails. Alternatively, sow indoors in autumn for flowering the following year – overwinter in a greenhouse/coldframe and transplant in spring.
