Something different for the fern garden. Position: full or partial shade Soil: moist, fertile, neutral to acid soil Rate of growth: average Hardiness: fully hardy The fronds of this distinctive fern are narrow and intricately divided, and each pinnae is usually backward-facing and has a forked tip. Therefore, it makes an unusual addition to a fernery or shady border, but it will also mix well with other woodland-style plants such as hostas, hakonechloas and vincas. Garden care:Incorporate lots of well-rotted leaf mould or garden compost into the planting hole. In cold areas in late autumn protect the crown of the plant with a dry mulch of straw or bracken.
