Produces lustrous, tongue-like fronds. Position: partial shade Soil: humus-rich, moist, well-drained, preferably alkaline soil Rate of growth: average Hardiness: fully hardy Each spring fresh new frilly-edged, strap-shaped fronds unfurl, creating upright clumps which look super when grown in naturalised clusters. It’s a useful fern for adding vertical interest towards the front of a partially shaded border, or for underplanting established trees and shrubs in a woodland setting. Handsome and decorative, once established, it will become tolerant of dryer soils. Garden care: Plant into soil that has been improved with organic matter and water regularly during the growing season. Do not allow the soil or compost to dry out until the plant has become established. Tatty or damaged fronds can be removed in early spring as or just before the new growth emerges.
