Pretty foliage for partial shade. Position: partial shade to full shade Soil: moist, but well-drained humus-rich soil Rate of growth: average Hardiness: fully hardy This deciduous, clump-forming maidenhair fern slowly spreads by underground rhizomes to form a small colony of decorative foliage. The finger-like green fronds often appear with a pink flush, and are held by glossy, near-black stems, which makes this a very pretty addition to both the woodland floor or shady borders. Garden care: Incorporate lots of well-rotted leaf mould, composted pine needles or garden compost into the planting hole. Cut back decayed fronds in winter to allow new growth to emerge.
