An elegant, long-flowering wildflower. Position: full sun Soil: moist but well-drained, or well-drained Rate of Growth: fast-growing Flowering period: June to August Hardiness: fully hardy A familiar sight on roadside verges and meadows, this tough, undemanding and attractive wildflower will often flower over several months. Rising above the fern-like foliage on slender, branching stems, the flattened flowerheads are packed with hundreds of white (or occasionally pink) flowers, which are sought after by bees and other pollinators. The flowers are also excellent for cutting and adding to dry arrangements. Garden care: Surface sow on seed compost, making sure not to cover the seed and keep warm (20-25C). Water from the base only when necessary and when the seedlings have developed a pair of two true leaves, gently prick out and pot on individually. Grow on, gradually acclimatising, before planting out after frost. When in growth, protect from slugs and (if necessary) stake with twiggy stems before the flowers appear. Cut back after first flowering to encourage a secondary flush in late summer/ early autumn. Old clumps can be revived by lifting, splitting and replanting in spring.
